Fitness Friday Newsletter- 10/1/21

Here are the top five findings from this week.

  • Fitness- In between my personally designed workout programs, I like to complete programming from other top trainers to get new ideas and continue learning from the field. Currently, I'm halfway through Ryan Flaherty's Pro Strength Training Program on the Nike Training Club App. Known as "The Savant of Speed" and trainer to top Nike athletes including, Serena Williams, Russell Wilson, and hundreds of others, Ryan's training philosophy focuses on mastering the fundamentals to gain a competitive edge. You can download the app and try out the program for yourself. I've really been enjoying it! His podcast, Trained, is also a great listen if you are interested in exercise and sports science.

  • Nutrition- I've been playing around with my daily caffeine routine and have found that transitioning to tea sooner in the day has helped produce greater alertness with fewer anxiety-producing side effects. The following are a few of my favorite options for fueling the caffeine habit daily.

    • Coffee- Fara Signature Roast: Roasted in Austin, Texas with an incredible aroma and taste. My girlfriend and I have fallen in love with this coffee over the past few months. I start the day with at least one cup prepared in a pour-over.

    • Tea- Tea Pigs Loose Leaf

      • English Breakfast Black Tea- This is the first drink I transition to each day. It's about half the caffeine as the coffee above but packed with flavor and equally good hot or iced.

      • Peppermint & Liquorice Tea- Before you judge, you have to try this! It's been the go-to nightly dessert ritual in the house for the past year. It's naturally sweet and helps curb the nighttime sweet tooth.

    • The best cup for preparing loose leaf tea: Tea Forte Kati Cup- It's available in many color options and is the best-designed cup with a built-in strainer and multi-purpose lid for preparing the perfect cup of loose leaf tea. Highly recommended if you're a tea fan or tea curious.

  • Recovery- After a high mileage week in preparation for the upcoming half marathon, I've used my recovery time to dive into stimulating courses on Masterclass. I highly recommend the newest course where Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell teach rock climbing. It's a masterfully produced course that combines stories, distilled insights, and on-location instruction. It's inspired me to pick up my bouldering habit and rejoin the local climbing gym. Also, James Cameron's class on Filmmaking is also incredibly insightful.

  • Business- I've started reading The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande and the structure paired with the tactical advice is riveting! Here's one of my favorite takeaways so far from the book. He talks about how since the beginning of time there are two primary categories of problems. In the past, most of our problems were of incompetence due to a general lack of access to knowledge and education. Today we face an overwhelming amount of problems from "ineptitude" described below. The checklist can serve as a simple and powerful system to overcome these prevalent types of problems.

  • Thought for the Weekend

    • “There is no reality except in action. Man is nothing else than his plan; he exists only to the extent that he fulfills himself; he is, therefore, nothing else than the ensemble of his acts, nothing else than his life.”
      ― Jean-Paul Sartre, Existentialism is a Humanism

    • What action will you take this weekend to serve as a vote towards the life that you desire?

I appreciate you, thanks for reading, and until next week,

Take care of yourself,

- Shiloh
